1. Organisations working directly with refugees and forced
migrants in Europe
Jesuit Refugee Service Offices
JRS
have offices in the following countries:
Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy,
Malta, Portugal,
Romania, Slovenia, the Ukraine and the United Kingdom. If
you are writing about the situation in one of these countries, please contact them for further information.
ECRE European
Council on Refugees and Exiles
ECRE is an umbrella organisation of 79
refugee-assisting agencies in 31 countries working towards fair
and humane policies for the treatment of asylum seekers and
refugees. On this website, you can find background information
about European policy, and also a data base and contact details
of the organisations who work directly with refugees in many
European countries. ECRE is a
supporter of this competition.
UNHCR
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees has
offices running projects in many European countries. It is also
a very good source of worldwide and European statistics and
background information on refugees.
Amnesty
International
Amnesty International runs an international campaign called 'Refugees have
Rights,' and many projects with asylum seekers in European
countries.
International Red Cross
Works on the ground with refugees in many European
countries.

MediaWise
MediaWise is an
independent charity set up by 'victims of media abuse' and
concerned journalists, politicians and media lawyers in the UK.
The organisation runs an exiled journalist network and has a good data base of organisations working with
refugees across Europe. MediaWise is a supporter of this
competition and will be part of the judging panel.
Online/More Colour in the Media
Online/More Colour in
the Media (OL/MCM) is a network of NGO's, broadcasters,
training institutes and researchers, set up to improve the
representation of ethnic minorities in broadcasting.
International Federation of Journalists
The International Federation of Journalists is the
world's largest organisation of journalists. First established
in 1926, it was relaunched in 1946 and again, in its present
form, in 1952. Today the Federation represents around 500.000
members in more than 100 countries. The IFJ promotes
international action to defend press freedom and social justice
through strong, free and independent trade unions of
journalists.
The Interventional Federation of Journalists supports this
competition.
Exiled Journalist'
Network
The Exiled Journalists’ Network (EJN) was set up to help
journalists who have fled to the UK to escape persecution
because of their media work.

Jesuit Refugee Service
Offices
Many JRS staff and volunteers visit detention centres
to provide support, legal advice and social care. Contact them to find more information.
Detention in Europe Website
JRS personnel in Europe accompany inter alia detained
asylum seekers and former detainees.
JRS has a dedicated website focusing on the administrative
detention of asylum seekers and irregular migrants in Europe. The
purpose of the website is to inform, to alert, and to advocate the rights
of detainees. JRS campaigns
on this issue at a European level in Brussels.
Exodus
Network
EXODUS is a network of
persons and associations in contact with asylum seekers and
other foreigners held in airports and transit zones in Europe,
grouping chaplains, social workers and legal assistants.
International Detention
Coalition
The International Detention Coalition aims to raise
awareness of detention policies and practices and to promote the
use of international and regional human rights standards and
principles as they relate to the detention of refugees, asylum
seekers and migrants.
