Jesuit Refugee Service Offices

Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, please contact them for further information.

ECRE European Council on Refugees and Exiles [EN]
ECRE is an umbrella organisation of 79 refugee-assisting agencies in 31 countries working towards fair and humane policies for the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees. On this website, you can find background information about European policy, and also a data base and contact details of the organisations who work directly with refugees in many European countries. ECRE is a supporter of this competition.

UNHCR
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees has offices running projects in many European countries. It is also a very good source of worldwide and European statistics and background information on refugees. 

Amnesty International [EN, FR, ES]
Runs an international campaign called 'Refugees have Rights,' and many projects with asylum seekers in European countries.

International Red Cross [EN, FR, ES and PT]
Works on the ground with refugees in many European countries.

MediaWise Trust:  Refugees, Asylum-Seekers and the Media (RAM) Project, 1999-2004 [EN]
This project was set up to Promote best practice in media representation of refugee and asylum issues in the UK
The organisation runs an exiled journalist network, published a guidance leaflet on how to report on asylum seekers and refugees, and has a good data base of organisations working with refugees across Europe


Online/More Colour in the Media [multilingual information]
Online/More Colour in the Media (OL/MCM) is a network of NGO's, broadcasters, training institutes and researchers, set up to improve the representation of ethnic minorities in broadcasting. On this website, you can find links to participating organisations in your country.

International Federation of Journalists
The International Federation of Journalists is the world's largest organisation of journalists. First established in 1926, it was relaunched in 1946 and again, in its present form, in 1952. Today the Federation represents around 500.000 members in more than 100 countries. The IFJ promotes international action to defend press freedom and social justice through strong, free and independent trade unions of journalists.

The IFJ promote Ethics in Journalism, and on this website you can find the Declaration of Principles on the Conduct of Journalists, which is proclaimed as a standard or professional conduct for journalists engaged in gathering, transmitting, disseminating and commenting on news and information in describing events.

Detention in Europe Website
JRS personnel in Europe accompany inter alia detained asylum seekers and former detainees. From this experience, JRS Europe published a comprehensive report on the detention of asylum seekers and irregular migrants in Europe. The purpose of this document is to inform, to alert, and to advocate the rights of detainees. JRS campaigns on this issue at a European level in Brussels. This website has the latest version of this report, details of European legislation on this issue and reports on detention from individual European countries.  

Accompany Detainees
The Jesuit Refugee Service has gathered together many documents and policies on this issue for a series of trainings they gave in 2005 about detention in Europe. They can be downloaded here.
   
Exodus Network
EXODUS is a network of persons and associations in contact with asylum seekers and other foreigners held in airports and transit zones in Europe, grouping chaplains, social workers and legal assistants.
