ABOUT THE PROJECT
JRS Europe has designed and implemented a training project, funded by the European Refugee Fund, directed to those persons attending to the needs of asylum seekers and irregular migrants in detention centres. The two day training was implemented in six countries during the Fall and Winter of 2005/2006 and covered the following issues:-
International and regional human rights and refugee/migration law and standards relating to asylum seekers and refugees in detention

Intercultural and interracial issues

Identification and response to psychosocial concerns of detainees
The training was carried out in six European countries:
- Bucharest, Romania (October 6 & 7, 2005)
- London, England (November 3 & 4, 2005)
- Brussels, Belgium (November 24 & 25, 2005)
- Valetta, Malta (December 6 & 7, 2005)
- Ljubljana, Slovenia (December 15 & 16, 2005)
- and in Rome, Italy (December 16 & 17, 2005)
The training team was comprised of three people with significant experience in working with refugees and asylum seekers:
- Anna Marie Gallagher, JRS consultant and international refugee and migration lawyer
- Helen Ireland, coordinator of the UK based organization, the Association for Visitors to Immigration Detainees (www.aviddetention.org.uk)
- Mr. Naboth Muchopa, Secretary of the Racial Justice Committee for
the UK Methodist Church
