TRAINER PROFILES
Anna Marie Gallagher, a North American attorney based in Spain, teaches refugee and migration law in Europe and is a consultant on advocacy and research issues to the Jesuit Refugee Service, an international non-governmental organization working with refugees and other forced migrants around the world. She has practiced criminal defense, human rights and immigration and refugee law during the past eighteen years in the United States, Central America and Europe. Ms. Gallagher has also done extensive advocacy work on migration and refugee issues. In addition to her legal, advocacy and academic experience, she has written extensively in her field of interest.Helen Ireland is the coordinator of the Association for Visitors to Immigration Detainees (AVID) (www.adviddetention.org.uk) and has been involved with the detained refugee and asylum seeker community in the United Kingdom for the past ten years. AVID is a national umbrella charity for groups of visitors to immigration detainees, linking them, providing information, training and support, including a Handbook for Visitors and raising issues of concern they identify to Government and appropriate statutory bodies. AVID is responsible for designing and implementing training programmes for the groups and shares good practices with organizations and individuals in the UK and in Europe. As coordinator of AVID, Mrs Ireland has hands on experience visiting detainees and the many Removal Centres throughout the UK. As a result of her experience, she is able to assess the legal and psychosocial needs of detainees and advocate for improvements in their detention experience through consultation with the Home Office on detention issues.
Naboth Muchopa is the Secretary for Racial Justice for the Methodist Church in the UK and has worked in that capacity as an advisor and advocate on racial justice issues since 1995. He is responsible for networking with other churches, voluntary and public organisations throughout the UK and elsewhere on issues relating to racial justice. Mr. Muchopa has extensive experience in designing trainings and materials relating to racial and intercultural sensitivity. He has written three books on racial justice training and co-authored two others for the World Council of Churches, of which he is a member of the Central Committee. He has run classes and workshops on these issues in Europe, the United States, Australia and South Africa.
