On April 10, 2006 a third arson attack took place on people
connected with the Jesuit Refugee Service in MALTA . Katrine
Camillieri, Assistant Director at JRS Malta , suffered damage to
her car and door. She herself suffered no physical harm.
The attack took place one day after Fr Jan Stuyt was
interviewed by The Times of Malta about the detention and asylum
situation in Malta .
This follows previous attacks on the cars of Jesuits on November
16, 2005 two cars at the house of two Jesuits working for JRS;
on March 13, 2006 seven cars belonging to the Jesuits, near the
office of JRS.

Several NGO’s in Malta expressed their support for JRS Malta:
The European Network against Racism Malta*, re-iterates its
strong condemnation of acts of violence and arson that have once
again taken place over the past days in the Maltese Islands.
Once again recent acts show clear and strong links to the issues
surrounding asylum seekers in Malta and that the perpetrators of
these actions are clearly targeting specific individuals who
have, over the years and more importantly recently spoken in
favor of the protection of the rights of irregular migrants.
These acts, are to us a strong sign of a growing violent group
within Malta, which while probably still restricted to a few
individuals has now moved on resort to sheer and indiscriminate
acts in violation of law in the propagation of its ideology.
ENAR Malta* expresses its support to the victims of the attacks,
and moreover, urges the authorities to take all necessary steps
to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice in the
shortest time possible.
ENAR Malta* further calls on the relevant authorities for the
implementation of laws and regulations regarding hate crimes.
