JRS Italy contributes to Italian security bill
February 25, 2009 - Following the approval of a draft bill
on public security to the Italian Senate in early February,
Centro Astalli, along with a number of other Catholic
organisations, met with members of the Constitutional Affairs
Committee and leaders of the House of Deputies.
The
draft bill has returned to the lower house of the Italian
government where amendments can still be made. Centro Astalli,
with Acli, Caritas, Comunità di S. Egidio and the Comunità Papa
Giovanni XXIII e Fondazione Migrantes, are pushing for various
changes to be made on articles of the bill that deal with the
fundamental aspects of the lives of migrants. Among the areas of
principal concern are proposed restrictions on the reunification
of families, increased difficulties for stay after the age of
eighteen, restrictions on the rights to marriage, a possible tax
on residence permits, and the increased presence of centres for
identification and deportation (Cie).
A paper has been released by the organisations in question,
concluding that while “legislative changes must be informed, the
dignity of the person is the primary objective of any just law”.
