SEPTEMBER 8, 2008 - Designed by Jesuit architect
Robert Dolinar, the new 'Room of Silence' at the Postojna
detention centre in Slovenia marks the successful completion of a project
initiated by JRS-Slovenia.
Spearheaded by country director Robin Schweiger SJ, along with chief of the
centre Mr Jože Konec, the new room was officially opened by Dr Zdenka Čebašek-Travnik, the Human
Rights Ombudsman of Slovenia.
At the opening ceremony, director Robin Schweiger delivered a short
speech explaining how the idea was born out of the out
of the JRS 10 New Member States project, completed last
year.
Following Fr Schweiger's address, a few words were said
both by Dr Čebašek-Travnik and a representative of
the Islamic and Orthodox community in Postojna and
the representative of the police headquarters in
Ljubljana Mr
Daniel Žibret.
Afterwards, Robert Dolinar presented the new room to those assembled and
explained the symbols used and the motivation behind his ideas for the room.
In addition to those already mentioned, in attendance on the day were
Marijan Šef SJ, the former director of JRS-Slovenia,
Milan Bizant SJ, the Slovenian provincial, who read a
letter sent by JRS-Europe director Jan Stuyt for the
occasion, and social
worker, Rebeka Balažić.
