JRS shocked and saddened by the death of  Fr. Nicholaspillai in Sri Lanka

Rev. Fr. Nicholaspillai Packiyaranjith, the JRS Mannar district coordinator was killed in a Claymore explosion on the Pooneryn (Poonakari) Road, at Kalvi'laan, on Thursday the 26th September 2007. He was taking relief food and humanitarian supplies to the refugee camp and to the Orphanage at Vidathalvu. Fr. Ranjith was traveling in a van with his driver Mr. Eugene. Father Ranjith was killed on the spot and Mr. Eugene, a JRS staff member, was seriously injured and is presently being treated at Vavuniya Hospital.

Fr. Ranjith had been visiting the displaced people of Mannar with food supplies and relief goods and had continued to work dispite the security problems in the region. Religion or caste was not a problem for Fr. Ranjith, he reached out to everyone and never wanted to abandon anyone displaced.

On 26th September, Fr. Ranjith and Mr. Eugene left with a van loaded relief supplies. They were trying to reach Vidathalvu when the van was attacked.

Letter from Rev. Dr Rayappu Joseph, Bishop of Mannar, condemning the attack.

Rev. Fr. Packiyaranjith
