Fr. Pedro Arrupe SJ, founder of Jesuit Refugee Service, was the 28th general (1965-83) of the Society of Jesus. Born Nov. 14, 1907 in the Basque country of Spain.

Chapter 7 - Multi-cultural Society

What does it mean to be a multicultural society? Is the society you live in multicultural?
As you think about the answers to these questions, take a look at your classroom, your school, and the local area in which you live and think about the following questions:

What many people in your class (or your parents or grandparents) were born in another country?

How many languages do pupils at your school speak?

From which countries have people come from to live in your local area?

Have people moved into the area recently or in the past?

What evidence can be seen – consider buildings, shops, street names, restaurants and anything else?

What changes to the local area do older people in your community remember in their life times?
