What is the Pedro Arrupe Award?
The Pedro Arrupe Award is a project on refugees organised by JRS Europe
across the jesuit schools in Europe. The Jesuit Refugee Service is an
international organisation with a mission to accompany, serve and defend the
rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people
JRS Europe aims to encourage the dissemination of better information and to
create a fairer perception of the situation faced by asylum seekers and refugees
in Europe. In this sense the project is targeting the young population, who are
usually more open to change their opinions and to take in new concepts. By
organising and Award at European level, JRS aims to promote dissemination of
information on refugees and asylum seekers among the pupils of the Jesuit
network schools in Europe.
The Pedro Arrupe award includes educational material on the refugee issue, to be
taught in schools throughout Europe, as well as activities aimed at developing
and deepening the subject matter which will be adapted to the curricula and the
ages of the students. Based on this knowledge, the pupils will be asked to
produce a team project, in order to participate in the award. The best projects
will be selected, first at regional level and later at European level. A
price-giving ceremony will be organised in Brussels.
According to the main objective of the project, the prizes are two trips to
visit refugee camps in Macedonia and Slovenia
How can I support my child?
The Pedro Arrupe Award aims to raise awareness on the refugee situation among
the students. It is hoped that the project will encourage them to take an active
interest in this field throughout their lives.
Parents are key to encouraging young people to become involved and take interest
in these issues. As you usually do, you can support the political awareness of
your children by discussing contemporary issues with them or by listening or
watching the news together.
During the award your child will be involved in a project production. There is a
wide range of possible activities your child could choose from. Your child may
need your help in completing surveys or finding information
